Urban water and wastewater systems should without harming the environment:

• provide water for a variety of uses to households, factories, offices, schools etc.;
  
• remove wastewater from users in order to prevent unhygienic conditions; and
  
• remove stormwater from streets, roofs and other surfaces in order to avoid damage from flooding.
