About Research Institute
The doctoral programme is still in the process of development. The first recruitment took place during late spring 2008. Postgraduate students who are offered a position in the programme must be enrolled in and receive funding from their home departments. Thus, the Swedish Research School in Global Health serves as an umbrella organisation for interdisciplinary encounters - through seminars, courses and workshops - and gives students access to both national and international networks.
The aim is to
achieve multi-disciplinary collaboration in education, research and training by
coordinating existing courses and seminars in global health and develop new
courses to fill gaps in knowledge and improve quality of research training. The
aim is also to increase participation of the collaborating institutions in low
and middle-income countries, creating a formalized network of institutions in
Sweden and collaborating countries. The specific aims of the research school
are:
- To provide
courses and seminars in global health on a doctoral level
- To develop a
base of new generations of researchers in global health
- To secure
international standard of global health research training in Sweden
- To provide a
creative environment for global health research students and teachers
- To create a
platform in Sweden for discussion of global health issues
- To stimulate
exchange between global health research students both nationally and
internationally
- To
participate in international networks of global health research training
Operation of
Programme
The operation of
the programme, as well as its organisation, are characterized by
interdisciplinary collaboration. For the doctoral student, this implies a double
alma mater: the home department from which the student graduates and the
doctoral programme. In addition, thanks to cooperation between the home
departments and the doctoral programme, a broad selection of courses can be made
available to the students. The courses are mainly held in Stockholm and Umeå.
Seminars and
special workshops will complement the courses and facilitate the process of
networking.
Organisation
Steering
committee
The research
school is run by a
steering committee consisting of 10 members from the participating divisions
and departments within the Medical Faculty of UmU and KI together with two
student representatives. Two of the members are from collaborating institutions
in low and middle-income countries. The chair of the steering committee also
acts as director of the research school.
Director,
coordinator, and administration
The director of
the research school, Prof.
Vinod
Diwan works closely with two coordinators, Dr
Asli Kulane from KI and
Dr
Anna-Karin Hurtig from UmU, who are responsible for the daily work of the
programme together with administrative personnel.

Funding
Umea University and Karolinska Institutet have received financial support (SEK 2.3 million per year for five years) from VR, the Swedish Research Council, to set up the Swedish Research School for Global Health. Each of the two institutions has more than 20 years of experience in research training programs in collaboration with low and middle-income countries. At Karolinska Institutet the implementing body is the Division of International Health (IHCAR) and at Umeå University, Umeå International School of Public Health (UISPH).
