During this event, hosted by the Swedish government, donors Global Fund met to discuss resource needs for 2006 and 2007 and forecasts of a lack of resources for 2005. The meeting also gave donors the opportunity to exchange views on the operations and effectiveness of the Fund.
The Global Fund works through voluntary contributions pledged by governments, private foundations, corporations and individuals. So far, more than 45 countries and donors pledged 5.9 billion USD to finance the Global Fund programmers in the world until 2008. However, given the current system of ad hoc contributions, it is difficult to plan activities of the Fund and to provide a continuous and predictable subsidies that currently receive 127 countries. At its sixth meeting in October 2003, the Global Fund Board decided to replace the current system by a funding system based on a periodic replenishment of resources.
The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is the president of the recovery process resources and Sven Sandstorm, vice-president. A second meeting on the replenishment of resources will be hosted by the British government in London on 5 and September 7, 2005.
