As the term implies, the core interest of the Structural Chemistry Programme of the Department of Materials Chemistry is in probing the intrinsic relationships between the atomic-level structure of a material – generally in its solid form – and its most characteristic properties.

We are currently exploring how defects and dynamics affect metal oxides and their surfaces and how many-body interactions affect structure and vibrations in ionic solutions. Finally, we're always working on one aspect or another related to how condensed-matter properties develop as we go from "molecule to cluster to bulk".

The research profile within the Polymer Chemistry laboratory at Uppsala University and through collaborations includes materials for growth factor delivery for tissue regeneration, protein, drug and gene delivery as well as the synthesis of biodegradabel polyemrs for in vivo use.

The research aims at giving an overview of the conversion processes: drying, devolatilisation and char combustion, of biofuels, with a special focus on wood.

The emphasis is on the modelling of the processes based on conventional methods from literature the literature. By the end of the research, the students should be able to simulate the conversion of a single biofuel particle in a defined surrounding and have a basic understanding of the physical relations and properties needed to describe the thermochemical conversion of biofuels. In addition, the students should be able to analyse the validity of the model by comparing the simulated results with measurements and have a basic knowledge on how the knowledge on the conversion of a single particle could be emphasised to boilers and furnaces.

To follow the research, it is expected that the students have a basic research or researchs in combustion science and combustion devices. The modelling work is intended to be made in Matlab, and it is recommended to have some basic knowledge in this software, or in some other mathematical software, or Fortran. Some knowledge in heat and mass transfer, and fluid dynamics are also helpful, before attaining the research.

Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Combustion

The objective of the research is to give an overview of laser / optical techniques for combustion diagnostics. The research is intended for PhD-students and professionals within the field of combustion and or flow phenomena who wants to get familiar with available optical / laser based techniques for combustion diagnostics, their applicability, possibilities and limitations. The research will give a general introduction to the underlying principles and the major features of the various techniques. At the end of the research the student will be able to identify which technique that is most suitable for a certain problem and situation.

The emphasis is on measurements of species concentrations, temperatures, velocities, particle and surface characteristics. The optical techniques applied for combustion diagnostics are based on non-spectroscopic and spectroscopic techniques.

The main non-spectroscopic techniques included in the research measure either movement of small particles seeded into the fluid or the laserheated soot particles. Examples of non-spectroscopic techniques discussed are Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser Induced Incandescence (LII).

Spectroscopic techniques study radiation either absorbed or emitted in order to draw conclusion of the structure of different molecules and atoms. After an initial description of classic emission/absorption spectroscopy, the focus will be on different techniques using lasers. Incoherent laser techniques covered are Rayleigh and Raman scattering, Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF), and Phosphorescence (LIP). Coherent laser techniques covered are Coherent anti Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), polarisation spectroscopy and DFWM.

The insight of metrology as a precondition for maintaining high quality standards in production has grown strong over the past years. Many have realized that shortages in quality are the real cost driver, and not the costs for metrology systems and processes in themselves. A prerequisíte for the production and control of precision products are thus well developed metrology techniques. The increased interest for metrology was also reflected when we initiated SIMET - the Swedish Industrial Metrology Forum www.simet.se

a forum for all interested in metrology, from instrument suppliers, consultants, educators, academic researchers to users who have a chance to have an effect on status, research and education.

The discipline of materials forming is focussed on plastic deformation of metals and alloys. Processes such as forging, rolling, extrusion and drawing are analysed by experiments and theories. Different kinds of manufacturing are studied, for example the forming of semi-finished products such as rods, wires, plates, strips, tubes and bolts as well as components for the automotive industry.

The aim of the plastic deformation is to give the material a specific shape and improved properties. – The teaching is focussed on describing different manufacturing processes and on methods of analysis meant for predicting the material flow, strains, stresses, temperatures, tool pressures, loads and energies. – The research is meant to contribute to process optimisation. This is done by improving the tool design and the way the process is executed. Focus is often put on increasing the material yield and tool life at the same time as the productivity shall be improved and the necessary energy minimised. Also the elimination of existing material defects – such as voids and surface cracks originating from the casting –- makes up a central part of the research field. Great attention is also put to minimizing the risk for defects generation during the plastic forming. The research is usually carried out in close contact with industry. Computer simulations, which are coupled to experiments, characterize the research.

Research of the department includes theory, models and technical solutions, which contribute to a favorable development of health, comfort, and security aspects for the building process and for the built environment.
