The following August, on holiday, we received a call from substitute keeper of our home in Madrid (the keeper was also on vacation), to communicate that in our staircase there was a leak. I dared not tell him he had been a leak in my house. In total, the company paid 1,820,000 pesetas. The premium I had paid three months before was 24,000 pesetas. Financially, my decision had been excellent. I thought I had already paid my insurance premium for the next 75 years. The Department of Political Science at Göteborg University consists of around

LUCCI is a research center at Lund University devoted to
studies of the carbon cycle and how it interacts with the climate system. The
centre is financed for a ten-year period (2008-2017) by a Linnaeus grant from
the Swedish Research Council VR.

The centre involves about 85 researchers from geology, physical geography,
climatology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, ecology, plant physiology, soil
science and microbiology. Three Lund university departments are represented:
Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, Microbial Ecology and Nuclear Physics.

Working together in a creative cross-disciplinary environment, our goals are to
increase the understanding of how the carbon cycle and climate system function
and interact, and to disseminate our findings to society.

Detailed knowledge about how climate and human activities influence the sources
and sinks of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane is needed in order
to make the informed and effective decisions needed for combating climate
change.

Trying to understand Sweden’s higher education system can
seem daunting at first. The following pages contain some basic information that
foreign students don’t automatically know.

Higher education in Sweden is subdivided into three levels. As a foreign
student, different options are open to you depending on the degree level you
would like to study at: undergraduate (1st cycle), Master’s (2nd cycle) or
doctoral (3rd cycle).

Another decision is what language you would like to study in. Most likely you
will choose one of our Master’s programmes or courses instructed in English. But
if your Swedish is fluent, Swedish courses are open to you as well, giving you
even greater choice.

At the national level, the National Agency for Higher Education, located in
Stockholm, is responsible for higher education and research. Institutions are
however free to structure courses and programmes according to their own needs,
but using a common credit compatible with ECTS.
 

Research Our research is frequently interdisciplinary,
spanning from molecular biology over biochemistry and synthetic chemistry to
chemical physics. We are presently about 50 people, with c.a.15 senior
researchers, 10 post-docs and 20 PhD students. Our department is organized in
two programs:

Chemical Physics lies in between chemistry and physics, akin to physical
chemistry. We focus mainly on laser spectroscopy and photochemical processes,
where chemical dynamics and reactions are initiated and studied with light,
often with ultra-short laser pulses on the femtosecond timescale.

Molecular Biomimetics is concerned with mimicking natural processes in synthetic
molecular complexes. We study both natural and artificial photosynthesis with
biochemical methods, EPR spectroscopy and metallo-organic synthetic chemistr.

Artificial Photosynthesis: Hydrogen from sun and water is a collaborative
project between the both divisions. Here we attempt to generate a valuable fuel
– molecular hydrogen – from solar energy and water. We mimic fundamental
reactions of natural photosynthesis in synthetic molecular complexes, but also
study and genetically control cyanobacteria to photosynthetically produce
hydrogen.

We teach on undergraduate courses in physical and general chemistry as well as
on more specialized courses.

Materials Chemistry is one of today’s most dynamic research
fields with a huge impact on social development and on our entire way of life.
There is an ever increasing demand for new materials and for improving existing
ones for many diverse technological applications: computers, electronics,
communication, energy storage, solar cells, machine tools, biomaterials, sensors
– to name but a few. The current development in Materials Science towards
“nanoscience” and the availability of nanomaterials stimulates new applications
in many broad areas, such as information technologies, health care, energy and
environment. Our ambition at the Department of Materials Chemistry is to
participate fully in this development, both in our research activities and in
our undergraduate teaching courses, where we place a special focus on the needs
of today’s and tomorrow’s technologies.
