Despite its relatively small size, Sweden has long been at the forefront in research and development. The statistics that assess the country’s award triadic patents (ie in the three areas of attribution: USA, EU and Japan) were even more remarkable. Only Switzerland has managed to get a better result that Sweden in this regard.
Besides, Sweden ranked first or second in 2001 for the number of scientific publications in proportion to population, in the fields of medical sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Sweden was the first in medical science and second, after Switzerland, in the natural sciences and engineering.
