Liquid biofuels

There is a rising global interest in renewable liquid biofuels for transports. In Sweden several small plants for the production of liquid biofuels have been built. The production of biogas and ethanol, which are the most common types of liquid biofuels in Sweden, amounts to the equivalent of 1.8 TWh annually.

At present Sweden has in total more than 200 plants for the production of ethanol from various raw materials and the production of biogas from landfills and sludge processing. Still more are being planned. To fulfil the requirements of the new EU directives on liquid biofuels, Sweden would have to build another 10-12 large-scale plants for production of ethanol. The largest ethanol plant in Sweden today is run by Agroetanol AB in Norrkoping, where 50 000 m3 of ethanol are produced annually.
