Voter turnout increased in the Swedish European Parliament elections in 2009, contrary to the overall European trend. At most, turnout in Danderyd Municipality. Pirate Party received strong support in the central municipality.
In this year’s elections to the EP was the Swedish turnout to 45.5 percent. This represents an increase over the 2004 election when 37.9 per cent voted. Thus was broken for the first time, the downward trend for the Swedish participation in European Parliament elections. This year’s turnout is the highest since Sweden joined the Union. Even in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia and Poland and increased turnout in this year’s European Parliament elections.
Low turnout in new EU Member States
Overall, the EU did, however, the turnout back, from 45.5 percent in 2004 to 43.0 per cent in this year’s election. At EU level, voter turnout has declined steadily ever since the first election to Parliament. A contributing factor to the decline in this year’s elections are low turnout in the new EU Member States. This year’s European Parliament elections are the first in which the Swedish turnout exceeded the European average.
First Time Voters
The number of first-time voters who had the opportunity to participate has increased relative to the 2004 elections. Then there were about 500 000 people while the number in this year’s election was about 600 000 people. The proportion of first-time voters totaled 8.4 percent of all eligible voters.
Turnout
Danderyd, the municipality which had the highest turnout with 64.4 per cent. In only 25 of 290 municipalities, the turnout exceeded 50 percent. Lowest turnout was in Haparanda, where only 28.6 percent of voters gave their vote.

Strong and weak attachments
Moderates stronghold was Danderyd, where they received 47.4 percent of the vote. The strongest support was in the constituency Danderyd 15, 63.9 percent. Was the weakest support for the Conservatives in Vilhelmina, where 3.6 percent voted for the party. The Social Democrats had their strongest support in Pajala Municipality, where they received 53.4 percent of the vote. The strongest constituency low contrast in Malmo, Manor House, where the full 78.3 percent of the valid votes cast fell to the lot. The weakest support was the Social Democrats in Danderyd, where they received 4.3 percent of the vote. Pirate Party was strongest in the central municipality, where they received 10.2 percent of the vote. Its strongest constituency had the contrast in Ryd 5 of Linköping, where 37.9 per cent of the votes went to the party. Least popular was the Pirate Party in Ydre where 3.6 percent of the vote fell to the lot.
