Sweden - general information

Sweden is a country with approximately 450,000 sq. km area and about nine million inhabitants, 12 percent are of foreign origin. The capital, Stockholm, Sweden with about 771,000 inhabitants. The official language is Swedish, recognized minority languages are Sami, Finnish, Meankieli (Tornedal-Finnic), Yiddish and Romani Chib and the Swedish population is mostly Protestant. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, its head of state since 14.09.1973 King Carl XVI. Gustaf. Its tasks are only representative and ceremonial nature. Head of Government (Stats Minister) has been 6.10.06 Frederik Reinfeldt of the Moderate Party, which has occurred since the Reichstag elections in September 2006 together with the Centre Party (Center Party), the Liberals and the Christian Democrats on the Government. In the opposition, the Social Democrats, the Left Party and the Environment Party (Miljopartiet). The workers are divided into three major trade unions organized in the “national organization (LO)”, “Tjanstemannens [2] Contras organization (TCO) and the Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations (SACO). The gross national product is 255 billion euros, the benefit ratio was 2006 at 30.6 percent.
