Sweden will offer 5.3 million Swiss francs
Sweden has donated 5.3 million Swiss francs (32 million SEK) to the Global Trust Fund for the Doha Development (FGASPDD) activities for 2008 and 2009.La Sweden is the largest contributor to the fund and the donation brings the total of its contribution to 21.9 million Swiss francs. The contribution of Sweden is a commitment over two years which corresponds to the new planning cycle biennial WTO. This donation will finance technical assistance programmes and training activities in developing countries, least developed countries and economies in transition. The aim is to enable developing countries to better understand the rules and procedures of the WTO and help improve the implementation of their obligations and to better exercise their rights as members. “I welcome this new gift that shows that Sweden is committed to assisting developing countries to take full advantage of the multilateral trading system and to better integrate into the global economy,” said Director General of the WTO, Mr. Pascal Lamy.
“Sweden will continue to support poor countries, particularly in their efforts to develop their trading capacity and better understand the WTO rules. We encourage other donors to do the same multi-year contributions to the Global Trust Fund for the DP, “says Marie Claire Sward Capra, Ambassador of Sweden to the WTO.
