The Swedish International Development Cooperation (SIDA) will contribute 1 million euros to a draft UNCTAD’s technical cooperation on investment promotion: announced today in Geneva Swedish Ambassador Elisabeth Borsiin Bonnier, at a meeting of the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD. This project, which focuses on capacity building and knowledge transfer bodies for the promotion of investment in developing countries, will contribute to the implementation of the project “Partnership on Investment for Development” launched at the eleventh session of UNCTAD (Sao Paulo, June 2004) and the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA) was designated as lead partner. This project will provide assistance through WAIPA for the transfer of knowledge in favour of investment promotion in developing countries; especially least developed countries, as well as capacity building these organizations. The main activities include the development of human resources through specialized training and study tours that will allow the exchange of experience. They also rely on research and publications on topics of direct relevance to professional investment promotion.
Mr. Kai Hammerich, President of WAIPA and Director General of Invest in Sweden Agency, said that the project would help WAIPA to achieve its objective, which aims to disseminate information and to disseminate best practices in investment promotion , Particularly in the interest of organizations promoting investment in developing countries. The member organizations will be invited to share their experiences and to participate in the programme of training and study tours.
The WAIPA was established in 1995, at a meeting of UNCTAD in Geneva. She then brought together 73 member organizations and meets today to 180, representing 147 countries. Cooperation between UNCTAD and WAIPA has been close for 10 years. The annual meetings of WAIPA were organized in parallel with the meetings of the Commission on Investment of UNCTAD and the recent conferences of UNCTAD in France, Thailand and Brazil. The next joint meeting of WAIPA and the Commission on Investment of UNCTAD will be held in Geneva from 6 to 8 March 2006.
